Bloomsburg, Pa. — The parents of an autistic boy have been charged after the child drove their car into a building while unsupervised, police say.

Christopher and Tara Lynn allegedly failed to watch their 9-year-old son while the family was staying at the Relax Inn, 2711 Columbia Boulevard, in January. Police were called to the motel at 1:30 p.m. after the boy crashed his parent’s Mazda sedan into one of the rooms, according to Scott Township Officer James Filko.

Christopher Lynn, 34, told police they’d kept their son out of school for the last few days since Lynn’s license was suspended and they couldn’t get him to school. Sometime during the day on Jan. 5, the boy reportedly took the keys to the car and put it in reverse, ramming it into the motel.

Christopher’s wife, Tara, 35, was also in the room when the boy crashed the car, Filko noted.

Surveillance footage shows the boy was alone outside the motel for approximately 15 minutes before the crash.

Although police contacted the Lynns several times for follow-up interviews, they didn’t respond back, police say. Children and Youth agents say Tara Lynn also failed to show for a scheduled interview.

The Lynns, Coal Township, are each charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
