Nico Gomez grew up in the Salvation Army Ironbound Soccer Club, named for the Newark neighborhood where it’s based and the bell-ringing charity that funds it. “I was 3 years old when I started,” said Gomez, 17, a senior at Kearny High School. “But back then, you had to be 4. But my mom, she begged them to let me go. And they’re like, ‘Nah, too much of a problem.’ But they took me. And I enjoyed it. My mom would tell me I was fine, and I would go run off with the coach. I would be so excited to go.”

BLOOMFIELD, NJ-- Victory number 19 for the 2023 Bloomfield High baseball team came at a clutch moment, as the Bengals downed West Orange, 12-2, in five innings, on May 25, in Bloomfield. Lacrosse: Phillipsburg Lady Liners season recap
PHILLIPSBURG, NJ - Juniors Jill Miller and Julia Butler once again led the offense when a young Phillipsburg High School girls lacrosse team concluded its season with a 19-10 loss to fifth-seeded Montclair in an NJSIAA tournament North Jersey, Group 4 first-round game on Friday. Miller scored four goals and added two assists to give her 61 goals and 19 assists on the season while Butler scored three goals and finishes the season with a team-leading 69 goals and 21 assists for 90 points. For their careers, Butler has 104 goals, and 33 assists and Miller has 86 goals and 23 assists. Sophomore Marissa Kozak added a goal and an assist and classmate Sophia Remian also scored for the 12th-seeded Stateliners. Kozak scored 23 goals with 10 assists this season, and junior Avery Ritt tallied 21 goals with 15 assists. The goalie all season was freshman Jordan Nonnemacher. Phillipsburg, which finished the season with a record of 4-17 after going 2-25 the previous two seasons, lose two seniors that were on the opening day roster in Callie Horsey and Amanda Johnson. Meghan Crane scored five goals and Megan Previdi contributed six assists for Montclair (8-9).

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ – Nine Hasbrouck Heights students athletes signed to continue their athletic careers next year at various colleges and universities at a ceremony held Thursday morning in the Hasbrouck Heights Middle School/High School media center. Athletic Director Mike Scuilla noted that with nine students signing, it was the largest ceremony that the school has held. Coaches, parents, teammates and classmates were also present, with a few coaches, including football coach Bryan Ille, swim coaches Laura Mielke and Ruben Sembrano, who teach in other school districts, getting excused for part of their day to attend the ceremony. Nutley Family Service Bureau's 'Night at the Races' Wins By A Nose
NUTLEY, NJ - The Nutley Parks and Recreation Building was transformed into a simulated racetrack on Saturday, April 22. The successful fundraiser, one of many, benefited Nutley Family Service Bureau.The annual Night at the Races event raised $22,000 this year for their organization. More than 230 people gathered in the gym and placed their bets on “horses” for a worthy cause and entered tickets to win various tricky tray prizes.
