It’s a fair question: Have people experiencing homelessness moved to Denver for a free hotel room?. At least one man did. The mother of a missing man messaged me the other day to tell me she is looking for her son. She said he moved back to Denver from Florida thinking he could get a free hotel room as part of Denver Mayor Mike Johnston’s House1000 plan. Of course, those rooms all are full now. Also, most people who received the rooms were in established encampments that the mayor swept. There never were any rooms for people who might move to Denver one week to be housed the next.

The Aurora City Council forged ahead Monday on a new “tough love” approach to homelessness that sentences urban campers to addiction and mental health treatment. The council decided at its study session to advance to a regular meeting an ordinance creating a new court for homeless campers. Ordinance sponsor Steve Sundberg said the court is not meant to be punitive. Offenders who successfully complete a year’s probation and their treatment plan would have the violation removed from their record, he said.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The prospects for seeing the Northern Lights from Johnson City, Tennessee, this weekend and tonight are influenced by space weather conditions and geographical location. Despite increased solar activity and a forecast for severe geomagnetic storms on May 12 and 13, which could lead to more visible auroras even at lower latitudes, Johnson City was unlikely to experience the Northern Lights. The city, situated far south of the usual aurora visibility zones, would need a powerful solar storm, akin to the Carrington Event of 1859, to have a visible aurora​ (NOAA SWPC)​​ (NOAA SWPC)​​ (Aurora Forecast for Canada's North)​. That said, the auroras were visible in the Tri-Cities last night and may be visible again tonight, Saturday, May 11, from 10 pm - 2 am Sunday.

High Solar Activity Sparks Hope, Northern Lights Visible in Tennessee This Weekend

The Denver City Council learned more Wednesday about the workforce development component of the Denver Asylum Seekers Program. The city has transitioned the way it helps migrants, closing shelters and instead placing 800 people in the asylum program. That includes people who had been staying in non-congregate hotel shelters, all but one of which have closed. New migrant arrivals will not be eligible for the six-month work program until some graduate, according to a presentation by city staff. The city intends to keep 500 people in the work program at a time, according to Tony Anderson, workforce development manager for the city.
