Sports Recap: Amelse powers Blaine baseball, Andover softball remains undefeated, Anoka tennis delivers in clutch

Carter Amelse homered, drove in three runs and earned the win in relief to help power Blaine baseball to a 9-6 win against Anoka April 18. Derek Schlomann went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, Wilson Guse had a pair of hits and knocked in two, Tori Barsness scored three runs, and Ethan Pettis picked up a pair of hits. Delivering two hits apiece for the Tornadoes were Jackson Provoncha, Evan Freking, Brayden Cherrey, Sam Poser and Clay Bernard.

Drew Law homered and Wyatt Myers doubled twice as Andover recorded a 6-4 win against Robbinsdale Armstrong April 23. Teddy Heller added a pair of hits, Anthony Pardo doubled and scored twice, and Brett Buettner earned the win on the mound.

A seven-run second inning sparked a 7-2 win for Spring Lake Park against Blaine April 22. Chase Neiger collected three hits and drove in three runs for the Panthers, with two hits apiece by Gavin Welch and Caden Jensen. Matthew Grundtner struck out 10 over 6 2/3 innings pitched.

Ty Lovcik tossed a three-hitter as Park Center/Columbia Heights/Maranatha shut out Richfield 10-0 April 22, improving to 4-1. Gresyn Rennie doubled, tripled and scored twice.

Cooper Fiskewold tripled and drove in two, while Owen Lamson allowed just two hits over five innings as St. Francis topped Cambridge-Isanti 3-1 April 22.

Dean Raatz and Solomon Kardell each recorded three hits as Legacy Christian overpowered North Lakes 21-11 April 23 to improve to 5-1.

Coon Rapids came away with a 7-4 win against Anoka April 23.

Fridley outslugged St. Paul Central 14-10 April 23.

Softball

Andover scored 10 runs in the first two frames as it eased to a 12-5 win over Robbinsdale Armstrong April 23, continuing its perfect start at 7-0. Kaelyn Polzin drilled three hits and drove in six, with two hits apiece by Laci Heppell and Morgan Kostecka. Kostecka also earned the complete-game win pitching.

Kayla Shaffer delivered four hits and five RBIs, with three hits apiece by Emily Vogel, Emmie Sylvia-Cochran and Lil Wright, as Blaine picked up an 18-2 win against Anoka April 18. Anoka earned an 11-1 win against Coon Rapids April 23.

Spring Lake Park handed Rogers its first defeat April 23, emerging with a 5-4 win as the Panthers improved to 6-2.

Boys lacrosse

Blaine rallied from a 5-1 halftime deficit to knock off Elk River/Zimmerman 8-7 April 22. Aidan Litkey scored three goals for the Bengals, and Alex Crane scored twice. Goalie Rylan Dickenson made 15 saves.

Anoka earned a 7-4 win against Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids April 17, led by Ethan Massmann with three goals, Charlie Hendrickson with two goals and two assists, and Nate Thompson with 12 saves. Toby Tranby scored twice for SLP/CR. SLP/CR came back to win a 10-9 thriller against Totino-Grace April 19, sparked by Tranby with five goals, and two apiece by Brody Herzog and Nolan Hazelwood.

Andover improved to 3-0 on the season with an 11-7 win over Sartell/Sauk Rapids April 19. Kaleb Weikel registered five goals and Cole Jensen tallied three, while Kaden Weikel made 13 saves.

Girls lacrosse

Andover moved to 2-0 in the Northwest Suburban Conference with a 16-3 win against Blaine April 17. Isabel Mika recorded five goals, Merrill Delich had four goals and four assists, and Maya Engler scored three goals for the Huskies. Brooklynn Hedberg scored twice for the Bengals.

Layla Jackson netted four goals as Totino-Grace/St. Anthony held off Spring Lake Park 11-8 April 19. Grace Schmidt scored three goals for the Panthers, with two apiece by Olivia Lohrke and Sophie Shimabukuro.

Boys tennis

A pair of clutch three-set victories propelled Anoka past Princeton 4-3 April 22 as the Tornadoes improved to 5-2. Eric Jenson won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, and the duo of Owen Van Linde/Julian Kuehn won 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-3 at No. 3 doubles, with straight-set wins by Sam Coombe at No. 3 singles (6-4, 6-3) and Ayden Boehlke/Solomin Theisen at No. 1 doubles (6-3, 6-1). Boehlke/Theisen remained undefeated on the year with their win.

Blaine powered its record to 9-1 with back-to-back 7-0 wins over Andover April 18 and Chisago Lakes April 22.

Boys golf

Spring Lake Park posted a 300 to top the field in a Northwest Suburban Conference meet at Baker National April 22. Anoka finished in third, Blaine earned fifth, Totino-Grace earned sixth, Coon Rapids earned 10th and Andover earned 13th.

Spring Lake Park’s Jake Birdwell was the medalist with a 71, followed by teammates Chase Birdwell (73), Ben Anderson (77), Jayson Zenz (79), Ozzie Roloff (81) and Lincoln Smith (81).

Jack Schmitz led Anoka with a round of 76, Tyler Gandrud shot a 79, Dillon Pederson shot an 80 and Will Cedarstrand shot an 82.

Blaine’s Tyler Verhulst shot a 73 and Nathan Lagoon shot a 76.

Oskar Berg led Coon Rapids with a 79.

Girls golf

Blaine shot a 203 to earn a 16-stroke win in a dual against Coon Rapids April 18, and Andover shot a 188 in a dual against CR April 22.

Boys track and field

Event-winners at the Fridley Meet April 18 included Fridley’s Henry Bandah Jr. in the 400, Lorenzo Hampton III in the 110 hurdles, Tykeilan Hy Shaw-Moore in the long jump, and Isaiah Watson in the triple jump; and Columbia Heights’ Laron Collins in the 200, Kevin Romero Rivera in the 3,200 and Sahvar Harvey in the high jump.

Event-winners for St. Francis at its home Saints Invitational April 20 were Wyatt Lind in the high jump and triple jump, Samuel Ruid in the shot put and discus, and Jacob Tilly in the long jump.

Girls track and field

Event-winners at the Fridley Meet April 18 included Fridley’s Aubrey Cochran-Starr in the 800, and Sakaya Nimley in the shot put; and Columbia Heights’ Melissa Torres in the 200, the 4x400 relay team, and Il M’aime Ntambwe in the triple jump.

Event-winners for St. Francis at its home Saints Invitational April 20 were Abbigale Paulson in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, Paiyton Pendergrass in the high jump, and Mackenzie Fiedler in the pole vault.
