    Pianist Jon Batiste attends ‘Sunday Suppah’ at historic Ballard House

    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Grammy-winning pianist and singer Jon Batiste stopped at the historic Ballard House for “Sunday Suppah” ahead of his Monday night concert in Birmingham.

    Batiste, a New Orleans native who has won five Grammys , gathered with friends, family and community Sunday evening. The “Sunday Suppah” kept the tradition of an over 80-year-old home recognizing Birmingham’s African American heritage .

    “This is empowering. This is enriching. This is the kind of thing you dream of when you come into a community — to be embraced by the community and connect,” Batiste said. “We have people I didn’t know from New Orleans, ancestors from the same part of the country that I’m from, and just kind of the connections when you go into community that happen. It’s magical.”

    Batiste will perform at Avondale Brewing Company on Monday night .
