Birmingham Airport Authority begins construction on $27M facility
A groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, May 24 with the Birmingham Airport Authority officially kicked off construction of the new 27-million dollar Air Cargo Facility at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. This facility will be the home to weekly international cargo flights from Stuttgart, Germany. Keep reading for all the details on this new addition.
Building features
According to a press release from the Birmingham Airport Authority, the airport partnered with global logistics leader, Kuehne+Nagel to bring regularly scheduled, international cargo flights into Birmingham. The partnership hopes to transform Birmingham into a long-term gateway to and from the Southeastern Corridor of the United States. This new building will consist of:
- 53,000 square feet with 48,500 square feet of warehouse space
- 17 bays in the loading docks
- 5 airside bay doors
- 4 roll-up doors (2 airside, 2 landside)
- Office space with conference rooms, restrooms + breakrooms with a mezzanine upstairs
The chair of the Birmingham Airport Authority made a statement expressing pride in their progress with this facility so far.

continue building on what we established earlier this year.”
When can I expect the new facility?
Birmingham Airport Authority stated that the construction process is expected to take 10 months and be completed by Spring 2024.
In 2022, there were 1,564 air cargo operations at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport that moved almost 21 metric tons of goods into the region. These numbers are expected to increase with the scheduled international cargo flights that began last month.
Why is Birmingham seen as an ideal city for additional cargo business? Birmingham Airport Authority explained that it’s because of our central location and the fact that getting cargo out to customers will not be slowed by the congestion that exists at larger airports!
