'Sea' you later: Birmingham Zoo says farewell to beloved sea lions
DAYS AFTER THE LAWSUIT IS RESOLVED. AND IT’S THE END OF AN ERA AT THE BIRMINGHAM ZOO AS TWO OF ITS LONGTIME RESIDENTS ARE PREPARING TO SAY FAREWELL. IT’S A SAD FAREWELL FOR EVERYBODY OVER AT THE BIRMINGHAM ZOO. WVTM 13, CHIP SCARBOROUGH IS LIVE AT THE ZOO RIGHT NOW WITH MORE ON WHAT’S HAPPENING. HI, CHIP. HOW’S IT GOING OUT THERE? HI, GLADYS AND JARVIS. VERY BITTERSWEET WEEKEND, YOU KNOW, FARLEY AND GEO ARE TWO OF THE ZOO’S BELOVED SEA LIONS, AND THEY’VE LIVED HERE FOR ALMOST 15 YEARS NOW. BUT IN JUST A FEW DAYS, THEY’RE GOING TO BE MOVING TO A NEW HOME IN A DIFFERENT REGION OF THE COUNTRY. TAKE A LOOK. WE WERE ABLE TO GET UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH FARLEY THIS AFTERNOON AFTER ONE OF HIS FINAL PERFORMANCES HERE AT THE ZOO. HE AND GEO, A FEMALE SEA LION, WILL BE MOVING TO THE NEW ENGLAND AQUARIUM IN BOSTON IN THE COMING DAYS. ALL DAY LONG, PEOPLE HAVE BEEN STOPPING BY HERE TO SEE THE POPULAR SEA LIONS, EVEN ABLE TO SIGN A BANNER THAT WILL BE DISPLAYED AT THEIR NEW HOME IN BOSTON. THERE’S OBVIOUSLY A LOT OF WORK TO PREP FOR SUCH A BIG MOVE. YES, ABSOLUTELY. SO THEY ARE GOING TO BE TRANSPORTED IN A SPECIAL CLIMATE CONTROLLED VEHICLE HEADING ON UP BEFORE THEY GET ON A SPECIAL PLANE WHERE THEY’LL BE THE LAST ONES LOADED IN AND THE FIRST ONES OFF IN BOSTON. SO DEFINITELY THAT FANTASTIC TREATMENT BETTER THAN AIR TRAVEL FOR MANY OF US. YEAH, THE ROYAL TREATMENT FOR SURE. SO SOME OF THE TRAINERS FROM THE THE NEW ENGLAND AQUARIUM HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN TRAVELING DOWN HERE TO BIRMINGHAM. SO THEY CAN GET TO KNOW FARLEY AND GEO A LITTLE BETTER BEFORE THEY MOVE UP THERE. ANYONE WANTING TO COME OUT AND SIGN THAT BANNER, THE ZOO TELLS ME YOU CAN DO THAT BOTH TOMORROW AND MONDAY. LIVE AT THE BIRMINGH

'Sea' you later: Birmingham Zoo says farewell to beloved sea lions
It's the end of an era at The Birmingham Zoo as two of its longtime residents are preparing to say farewell. Gio and Farley are the zoo's beloved sea lions that have been in Birmingham for about 15 years. However, in a few days, they'll be moving to a new home in a different region of the country. The Birmingham Zoo says the move is what's best for the sea lions. WVTM 13 was able to get an up-close look at Farley on Saturday after one of his final performances at the zoo. He and Gio, a female sea lion, will be moving to The New England Aquarium in the coming days. All day Saturday, people stopped by to see the popular sea lions. Visitors were even able to sign a banner that will be displayed at their new home in Boston. The zoo says there is much work to be done to prepare for such a move. The Birmingham Zoo's vice president of learning and engagement, Amy Rutherford, says: "So, they are going to be transported in a special climate-controlled vehicle heading on up before they get on a special plane where they'll be the last ones loaded in and the first ones off in Boston. So, definitely that fantastic treatment. Better than air travel for many of us!"Some of the trainers from The New England Aquarium have already traveled to Birmingham to get acquainted with Gio and Farley before they move. Those wishing to sign the banner can visit The Birmingham Zoo on May 28 and 29 during business hours.
