5 ways to celebrate Memorial Day weekend in Birmingham

For many folks, Memorial Day weekend is devoted to the backyard, the barbecue grill or a comfy lawn chair. If you’re willing to venture out, however, plenty of events are happening in the Birmingham metro area. Here are five that caught our special attention, planned for Saturday through Monday, May 27-29.

SYMPHONY IN THE SUMMER

What to expect: Alabama Symphony Orchestra perform outdoor concerts in summer series.

When: May 27-28 at 7:30 p.m. Programs are “Music from Peer Gynt & More” on Saturday and “Family Fun Night” on Sunday, both conducted by Christopher Confessore.

Where: Railroad Park, 1600 First Ave. South, Birmingham.

Admission: Free.

SALSA SHOWDOWN

What to expect: Local restaurants compete to make the best salsa, guacamole, queso and specialty dip. Visitors get sampling privileges and ballot for “audience choice” votes. Event includes hot pepper eating contest.

When: May 27, 2 p.m.-6 p.m.

Where: Cahaba Brewing Co., 4500 Fifth Ave. South, Building C, Birmingham.

Admission: $20 advance, $25 at event, free for kids age 5 and younger. Proceeds benefit education and outreach programs at Sidewalk Film Center and Cinema.

BIRMINGHAM STALLIONS VS. NEW ORLEANS BREAKERS

What to expect: United States Football League teams compete in Week 7 of season.

When: May 27 at 3 p.m.

Where: Protective Stadium, 1020 24th St. North, Birmingham.

Admission: $10-$40 via Ticketmaster.

The Grand River Drive-In in Leeds has several screens and a large parking lot for moviegoers.

GRAND RIVER DRIVE-IN

What to expect: Screenings of “The Little Mermaid,” “Rally Road Racers,” “Fast X,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”

When: May 27-28, starting at 8 p.m.

Where: Grand River Drive-In, 1453 Grand River Parkway North, Leeds.

Admission: $8 adults; $6 seniors, veterans and first responders; $5 kids.

NICKEL CREEK

What to expect: Bluegrass/folk/Americana trio performs.

When: May 29 at 7 p.m. Rescheduled from previous date of April 25.

Where: Avondale Brewing Co., 201 41st St. South, Birmingham.

Tickets: $43 general admission, $169 VIP, plus service charges, via Ticketmaster. All tickets purchased for original date will be honored on May 29.
