BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Birmingham Police are investigating a homicide on the city’s southwest side.

Police responded to the scene in the 500 block of 12th Street Southwest around 9:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Authorities found an adult male on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound. BFRS arrived on scene and pronounced the man dead.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office confirmed on Wednesday that the victim is 37-year-old Sidney Cornell Saxton of Birmingham.

Officers believe Saxton was possibly shot during a shootout based on information from ShotSpotter. Officer Truman Fitzgerald with the Birmingham Police Department said ShotSpotter picked up about 40 rounds fired in that area.

Patrol officers said they saw a man running from the scene, and he was detained for questioning.

Officers also found a firearm on the victim.
