Firefighters responding to a blaze at an Ensley home early Monday found a woman partially hanging out of a window from where she had tried to escape.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded to the fire just before 1 a.m. at the residence in the 1000 block of 45th Street, said Battalion Chief Tobias Jones.

They arrived to find a fire in the kitchen that was quickly extinguished.

The crews also found a woman at the rear window. Jones said she was unresponsive and had cuts to her arms and hands from where she had broken the glass in an attempt to get out of the home.

Firefighters rushed her to UAB Hospital. She is in critical condition.

Jones said no other injuries were reported. The investigation into the fire is ongoing.
