BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - UPDATE: A suspect has been arrested by the Birmingham Police Department in the death of a former UAB football player at a gas station on Tallapoosa Street Sunday night, March 26.

Byron Dedric Steele is facing capital murder charges in the death of 25-year-old Demetrius Antwan Davis Jr.

Steele, according to police, will be taken to the Jefferson County Jail where he will be held with no bond.

Police say the motive in the shooting is retaliation.

ORIGINAL: The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a homicide they say happened at a gas station on Tallapoosa Street Sunday evening.

Authorities confirmed Monday morning the victim was 25-year-old Demetrius Antwan Davis, Jr. of Birmingham. Davis was a former UAB football player.

Police were called to the Circle K located at 1700 Tallapoosa Street around 6 p.m. on Sunday where they found Davis unresponsive lying in the parking lot.


Birmingham Fire & Rescue crews were called to the scene and they pronounced the victim dead.

Police say their preliminary investigation shows the victim was approached by an unknown suspect who they say opened fire on him.

Police say the victim was able to return fire before collapsing.
