Jackson-Olin HS senior shot, killed in Birmingham; shooting ruled justifiable
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - UPDATE: Birmingham Police Department detectives received a ruling in connection to the homicide investigation of 17-year-old Caleb Cornandus Whitt.
The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office ruled the shooting as justifiable.
ORIGINAL: The Birmingham Police Department is investigating a shooting that killed a Jackson-Olin senior at noon Sunday, Mar. 26.
The victim is 17-year-old Caleb Whitt, according to Birmingham City Schools.
Police were called to the area around the 200 block of 3rd Avenue Southwest Sunday afternoon after multiple ShotSpotter alerts in the area.
Officers soon responded to the University Crossings Apartment Complex and found Whitt lying in the back parking lot. He was suffering a gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire & Rescue crews responded to the scene and pronounced him dead.
The preliminary investigation, according to police, shows a shootout between two groups happened within a mile or less of the location the victim was located. Police say the victim was dumped at the 3rd Avenue Southwest location.
One suspect is in custody after police detained him during a traffic stop in the area.
Birmingham City Schools Superintendent released the following statement:

Detectives continue their investigation.
