Her woodworking firm drew attention. But lawsuits are now the story
Tonda Thompson has seen a lot of publicity, including a spot on "The Kelly Clarkson Show," since launching her Milwaukee woodworking business in 2020. The story is intriguing: Thompson, whose career path includes modeling, started She Slangs Wood Co. after her young son danced enthusiastically on a coffee table − breaking it. Stores were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, so Thompson built her own table from scratch. Her hobby turned into a business after she posted her work on Facebook and got requests from people to make tables. But the narrative has shifted to the Milwaukee County Courthouse. That's where Thompson and her businesses are defendants in three major lawsuits focusing on the redeveloped Harambee neighborhood building which houses She Slangs Wood – which Thompson could lose to her main lender after facing cost overruns and missing mortgage payments. "It's a whirlwind of trying to...stay afloat," Thompson told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Legacy Redevelopment Corp. is seeking to foreclose on the building, at 128 E. Burleigh St. That's tied to an overdue debt of around $164,000, according to the lender's lawsuit. Thompson and her businesses also are defendants in collection suits: Greater Milwaukee Foundation Inc. is owed more than $48,000
