(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago Police officers helped Elizabeth French celebrate her retirement this week after 27 years of teaching special education in Berwyn South District 100.

And very much on all their minds: French's daughter, Officer Ella French, killed almost two years ago.

Officers cheered and applauded as Elizabeth French walked out of the Piper School in Berwyn on her last day. She says she and her daughter Ella had talked about traveling together after her retirement.

"My child was a beach child. So, places like Mexico and Costa Rica and Puerto Rico and stuff like that,” Elizabeth French said. "I was also trying to broaden her horizons to other places. But you know what? It was open to friendly debate.”

Elizabeth French says she went to Costa Rica over Christmas break.

"And I promised myself when I went to someplace with some sand, with a beach, I'd bring back some and give it to her. So, I did.

"I told her I had a good time. I told her she probably wouldn't have liked it. Not enough action for her. But it was fun."
