Annual 'Evening in Paradise' honors outstanding citizens and teams

Bernalillo County has a lot to celebrate. It's the county with the biggest population and the biggest budget, but its greatest source of pride is the citizens, old and young, who make it a one-of-a-kind place.Once again, Paradise Hills Park was the place to show that pride with an "Evening in Paradise" celebration Saturday — a family friendly mix of food, arts and crafts, music and dancing and activities that also included awards for Outstanding Citizens and Outstanding Teams.County Commissioner Walt Benson was on hand to announce the winners.The 2023 Outstanding Citizens were Ana Garcia, a long-time volunteer coach for Alameda soccer; Lynn Armijo, who runs the family business, Four Winds Mechanical, and was recently named New Mexico Small Business Person of the Year by the Small Business Administration; and Ahren Griego, a special education teacher at Volcano Vista High School and head wrestling coach for both the boys' and girls' teams.Speaking of which, the awards for 2023 Outstanding Teams went to the Volcano Vista High School boys and girls wrestling teams; the Hope Christian girls soccer team and the Hope Christian girls dance team.The celebration ended at sunset with a Bernalillo County Movies in the Park presentation of "Lilo & Stitch."
