BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – With Thursday marking the official start of the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, Berkeley County emergency management officials are urging residents to get ready. The six-month season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
“We want all Berkeley County citizens and their families to be prepared since we live in an area that is susceptible to these storms. Have a plan for you, your family, and make it personal,” said Will Rochester, Berkeley County’s emergency management director.
“Build an emergency kit if you don’t have one already before the day comes you actually need it. Know the impacts of these storms and that we are not immune,” he continued.

The upcoming Atlantic hurricane season is expected to be less active than recent years, according to weather experts.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts a 40 percent chance of a near-normal season, a 30 percent chance of an above-normal season and a 30 percent chance of a below-normal season.
NOAA weather forecasters are also predicting a range of 12 to 17 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, five to nine could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 1 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA said it has a 70 percent confidence in these ranges.
