LOUISVILLE, Ky. – California third baseman Makena Smith picked up another postseason honor on Wednesday, earning 2023 NFCA Third Team All-America recognition as announced by the association.

Smith was named to both the All-Pac-12 and NFCA All-Pacific Region First Teams in the last month and is the first Golden Bear to be a two-time All-America selection since Jolene Henderson earned her third honor in 2013.

Going into the record books as one of Cal's best players of all time, Smith became the Bears' first NFCA All-American since Nisa Ontiveros in 2016 last season and the 43rd overall to be named an All-American.

Smith, a fifth-year team leader and captain, entered the Cal all-time top-five lists in both home runs (46) and RBI (162). She finished her career two home runs away from fourth in Cal history and four RBI out from fourth all-time.

At the conclusion of Cal's first NCAA Regional appearance since 2018 two weeks ago, Smith entered two more Cal all-time top five lists, standing fifth in both career batting average (.364) and slugging percentage (.628).

The Murrieta, Calif., native led Cal in both total bases (121) and home runs (16), good for third in the Pac-12. Her 47 RBI tied for seventh in the conference and she earned Pac-12 All-Defensive team honors after making run-saving plays at the hot corner throughout the season and accounting for eight double plays.
