Forward progress stopped for Texas Summit Fire near Benson

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - The Benson Fire department told 13 News photographer on the scene that the fire is 455 acres and 30% contained and forward progress has stopped.

BFD said the fire was caused by a crash on Interstate 10 eastbound at milepost 319 (between East Dragoon Rd and the Texas Canyon Rest Stop) on Wednesday, March 29.

According to the Department of Public Safety, the two-vehicle collision happened at 1:22 p.m. and left one person dead and three injured. They were all from the same car.

The sole occupant of the second car was not injured.

DPS said the car with the fatality and injuries left the roadway, struck some rocks, went down an embankment, and eventually became fully engulfed in flames.

The collision and vehicle fire resulted in a brush fire.

DPS said the extent of the injuries, the identities of those involved, and the possibility of impairment are not known at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
