Caravel remains on top of our rankings despite a loss to undefeated Rising Sun (MD). There is movement after the Buccaneers while things stay the same from the 5th spot to No. 10. There are plenty of good matchups this week including 302 Sports live broadcast featuring No. 10 Cape at No. 4 Sussex Central.
No. 1 Caravel (6-1) The Buccaneers suffered their first loss of the season to “out-of-state” power Rising Sun (MD) last week by a score of 5-4 in 8 innings. The Tigers are 7-0 on the season and will meet No. 2 Appo in Middletown this week. Katrina Baran doubled home two runs in the top of the 7th to give the Bucs a 4-3 lead, but the Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the 7th and won it in the 8th. Caravel plays 4 games this week versus Delmarva Christian, Newark Charter, Oxford (PA), and No. 3 Laurel on the road Saturday.
No. 2 Appo (7-0) The Jags move up a spot this week with Central falling to Laurel. Coach Brian Timpson picked up his 250th victory last week as Appo scored 39 runs in wins over Delmarva Christian, Charter School of Wilmington, and Delcastle. Ayla McCathern was the winning pitcher in all 3 games while Brooke Widdoes and Lauren Foltz both homered. The Jags travel to Christiana before hosting Rising Sun Tuesday and rival Middletown Thursday.
No. 3 Laurel (7-2) Laurel had an interesting week that began with an 8-5 loss to Caesar Rodney. The Bulldogs rebounded with wins over Delmar and a 1-0 pitching duel over previous No. 2 Sussex Central. Kylee Hill scattered 3 hits and retired 8 batters via strikeouts in the close victory over the Golden Knights. Baylee Lynch tripled and scored the game’s only run. The Bulldogs face Woodbridge, Sussex Tech, and Sussex Academy this week.
No. 4 Sussex Central (7-2) The Golden Knights pulled away from No. 6 Lake last week by scoring 3 runs late in a 6-2 win. Madge Layfield homered plus recorded 15 strikeouts in the hard fought victory. Madge also retired 15 Laurel batters by strikeout in the loss to the Bulldogs. Central will host No. 10 Cape on a 302 Sports live broadcast Tuesday before traveling to No. 9 Indian River and Newark Charter this week.
No. 5 St Marks (7-1) The Spartans only played one game last week posting an 11-1 win versus Archmere. The Saturday game against Lake was postponed. Cam McIlvain picked up the win against the Auks. Morgan Hall collected 2 rbi’s on 2 hits, while Kimorah Neal also knocked in two runs for the Spartans. St Marks faces Red Lion before a “top 10” game at Piedmont Thursday versus #8 DMA. They finish the week against Sussex Academy.
No. 6 Lake Forest (8-1) Lake lost for the first time this season in Georgetown last week 6-2 to Sussex Central. The Spartans closed to 3-2 in the top of the 6th, but the ‘Knights added 3 insurance runs in the home half of the inning. Carah Sumpter recorded 9 strikeouts in the loss. Lake got back in the win column, scoring 10 runs in the 1st inning in a 15-0 win over ECHS last Thursday. The Spartans face #9 Indian River, Smyrna, and Odessa this week.
No. 7 Polytech (6-2) The Panthers posted 2 wins last week over Early College High and Smyrna. In the Smyrna game, 8 different starters recorded a hit, with 6 of them scoring a run. Polytech was down 2-0 after three innings then exploded for a “6-spot” in the top of the 4th. The rally was capped off by Julia MacConnell’s 3-run homer to right-center. Mara Everton picked up the win. The Panthers meet Milford, Woodbridge, and Middletown this week.
No. 8 DMA (5-2) The Seahawks scored 18 runs in two games last week with an 8-4 win over Charter of Wilmington and 10-1 against Delmar. Emily Trzonkowski picked up the wins in the circle. The hawks bats collected over 20 hits in the two victories. DMA faces First State Military before a “top 10” meeting at Piedmont against No. 5 St Marks on Thursday. They finish the week Saturday versus Smyrna.
No. 9 Indian River (7-3) The Indians have won 5 straight going into this week with two top 10 games looming against No. 6 Lake Tuesday and No. 4 Sussex Central Thursday. Wins last week included a 3-1 victory over Smyrna, and a 9-2 win against Caesar Rodney. Megan Daisey picked up the win over the Riders while Sophia Scurci, Olivia Hitchens, and Kathryn McHale all doubled in the game.
No. 10 Cape (6-2) The Vikings won all 3 games last week including a very impressive 9-5 game against Maryland power Stephen Decatur. That win snapped Decatur’s 10-game win streak. The Seahawks handed Sussex Central its first loss of the season earlier this month. The Vikings combined for 11 hits as all 10 players in the starting lineup collected at least one hit in the win. Abby Marsh struck out 8 to get the win, plus added a 2-for-4 appearance at the plate. Ava Calciano extended her hitting streak to 15 games with a single. The Vikings meet ECHS prior to the live 302 Sports broadcast Tuesday at Sussex Central. They finished the week against CR (5-4) and Conrad (6-2).
Ironically, two teams on our radar are, Conrad and Caesar Rodney.
