Funeral set for 11-year-old shooting victim

BATON ROUGE — Funeral services have been announced for Matthew Fortenberry, the 11-year-old who was shot and killed on March 16.

A 17-year-old has been charged with shooting and killing Fortenberry on Crestway Ave. Fortenberry was reportedly shot while sitting inside a vehicle.

Sources tell UWK that Fortenberry’s mother rushed him to Our Lady of the Lake hospital where he later died.

Fortenberry’s funeral is set for Friday, March 31 at 11 a.m. at the Wilson-Wooddale Funeral Home. He will be honored following the services at the Charles R. Kelly Community Center on Riley St. in Baton Rouge.

The teen suspect charged with Fortenberry’s murder has not yet been identified by police. Sources tell UWK that the teen was shot at least twice before being found on Greenwell St. Police said at the time he was treated at a local hospital before being booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

He has been charged with first degree murder, four counts of attempted first degree murder, false imprisonment with a dangerous weapon and illegal discharge of a firearm.

A motive for the shooting has not been established. Meanwhile, Fortenberry’s family is asking for thought and prayers “as well as your help to stop the violence in the community.”
