Louisiana State Police is investigating a single-vehicle crash that killed a Baton Rouge man late Thursday night in Ascension Parish.
Officials say 26-year-old Kelvin Ortega was driving a Chevrolet sedan headed north on at a high speed on Boudreaux Road.
For reasons being investigated, police say Ortega disregarded a stop sign at the intersection of La 429 and hit the opposing side of a canal.
Police say Ortega was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
As part of the ongoing investigation, a toxicology sample was obtained from Ortega and will be submitted for analysis.
Police say impairment is suspected. The crash remains under investigation.
