Development and climate change continue to threaten Balcones Canyonlands creatures
Stewards of the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve checked in on the status of its most vulnerable residents at their last meeting. Debra Scott, who is the environmental project manager for Travis County, filled in members of the Balcones Canyonlands Conservation Plan Coordinating Committee on species that are “up and coming on the endangered species list.” In Travis County, there are seven endangered species, one delisted species (the black-capped vireo) and 27 “species of concern.” In addition, there is a threatened species that is not covered by the BCCP, the Jollyville Plateau salamander.
Bastrop City Council approves Valverde North rezoning
When completed, 352 residential lots will be constructed on the 87 acres belonging to the Valverde development. (Jane Turchi/Community Impact) Following a public hearing on the rezoning of a 6-acre section of the Valverde development along FM 969 near Hwy. 71 called Valverde North, Bastrop City Council approved a more urban zoning for the area.
Lincoln Speedway Salutes Fallen Firefighters
ABBOTTSTOWN, PA – Lincoln Speedway will host the National Fallen Firefighters Night “Guise-Little Memorial” on Saturday, May 18. The night will feature the 410 sprint cars in a $6,000 to win and $600 to start 36-lap feature and the 358 sprint cars will be racing for $1,500 to win and $200 to start. The 410 sprint cars will start the night with time trials and utilize the PA Speedweek format.
Bastrop’s new $32.6M wastewater treatment plant is now online
At capacity, the Bastrop Wastewater Treatment Plant No. 3 can process 10 million gallons of water a day. (Courtesy city of Bastrop) Despite delays, Bastrop Wastewater Treatment Plant No. 3 came online in mid-May. While the completion of the plant increases the city’s wastewater treatment capacity by 2 million gallons a day, expansions to the plant are already expected to accommodate increased need.

The Travis County Sheriff's Office issued an arrest warrant for a man deputies said shot and killed a man at a bar in southeast Travis County early the morning of Friday, May 3, according to court documents.
Dog stuck under tree in Bastrop, rescued by emergency crews
BASTROP, Texas — A dog found herself entangled in roots in Bastrop, unable to escape. Luckily, crews with Bastrop County Emergency Services District No. 2 jumped in to help. Photos posted by the department show the brown Doberman curled up in the tiny underground hollow. The C-shift crew worked together, digging to expand the entrance.
