BRADLEY, Maine (WABI) - Saturday was the annual Alewife Day hosted by Maine Forest and Logging Museum. “Every year, millions, literally millions of alewives come back up through here to spawn in Chemo Pond,” explains National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) fisheries biologist Max Tritt. “The problem is with the dams and the barriers that we put in their way, they can’t quite make it. So NOAA, our partners Corps of Engineers, several others designed and built this fishway to help get them back into Chemo Pond.”

The developers of a large land-based salmon farm in Millinocket said they've secured nearly all of the necessary permits and expect to start on-site work later this year. The project was announced two years ago as a partnership between the company Katahdin Salmon and the nonprofit Our Katahdin.
