HONfest participants push past controversy, excited for weekend
TO EXPECT. THE PLANNED PARENTHOOD CONTROVERSY HAS MANY PEOPLE SAYING THEY WILL STAY AWAY. BUT THE MERCHANTS ASSOCIATION IS TRYING TO CHANGE THAT. WE ARE SO EXCITED. EVERY YEAR WE LOVE COMING OUT HERE. THE SALON WILL SET UP ON THE SIDEWALK. THEY’VE BEEN GETTING READY FOR WEEKS. I LIKE TO DO THE HAIR TINSEL THAT TYPICALLY LIKES TO COME OFF AS LIKE FAIRY LIGHTS. WE DO A LOT OF GLITTER GLITTER PARTS IN THE HAIR, GLITTER ON THE FACE. JUST TRY TO KEEP THE GOOD VIBES GOING AND FLOWING THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE DAY. FAN FEST IS KNOWN FOR CROWDS, GOOD FOOD, BIG HAIR, LOTS OF COSTUMES AND MUSIC ON THREE STAGES. SIGNS LINED THE STREETS TELLING PEOPLE THERE WILL BE NO PARKING ON SUNDAY AND SATURDAY ON 36TH STREET. THE PARKING MAY BE HARD TO FIND. THE AVENUE, KITCHEN AND BAR LOOKS FORWARD TO MAKING SOME MONEY. THEY WILL HAVE FOOD AND DRINK SPECIALS AND WE’RE GOING TO HAVE SOME OUTSIDE STREET FOOD, MEXICAN STYLE MANGOS WITH A LITTLE TAHINI AND CHIPOTLE SPICE. AND WE’LL DO TACO SPECIALS AS WELL. EARLIER, HEMPFEST ORGANIZERS INITIALLY SAID PLANNED PARENTHOOD COULD NOT TAKE PART BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO REMAIN POLITICALLY NEUTRAL AND AVOID ANY TYPE OF CONFLICT. SEVERAL BUSINESSES AND CITY LEADERS POSTED THEIR FRUSTRATIONS WITH THE SITUATION ON SOCIAL MEDIA, BUT MERCHANTS BANDED TOGETHER TO HELP PLANNED PARENTHOOD. WHEN WE HEARD THAT PLANNED PARENTHOOD WAS BEING ASKED OR TOLD THAT THEY COULD NOT PARTICIPATE, THAT WE RALLIED TOGETHER EVERY BODY IS DONATING 1,015% OF SALES FROM THIS WEEKEND TO SUPPORT PLANNED PARENTHOOD IN MARYLAND. FLAUNT HAIR BOUTIQUE WILL CLOSE FOR THE DAY AND ALLOW PLANNED PARENTHOOD TO USE ITS SHOP TO PASS OUT LITERATURE AND SPEAK TO PEOPLE ON FIRST IS 11 TO 8 SATURDAY AND 12 TO 6 ON SUNDAY.
