9-year-old girl still in critical condition one month after crash

A 9-year-old girl remains in critical condition after a car hit her and her brother on Liberty Heights Avenue one month ago today.

Community members held a prayer vigil for the two siblings who were hit on their way to school.

“Every day is a little bit better, so we’re just taking it one day at a time,” said Mark, father of the victims. The family asked not to be identified by their last name.

Last month, at the 4000 block of Liberty Heights Avenue, police said a school bus crashed into a Ford Focus. That car crashed and hit Milan, 9, and Jordan, 22.

“Jordan has been released to extensive rehabilitation. Milan continues to be in critical condition, having endured three surgeries since the accident,” said a family member.

Duane Alexander was working nearby when it happened and rushed over to give CPR.

“Instantly, when I put my hands on her, it horrified me. That’s why I’m doing as much as I can right now because I felt every bone in her body broken,” he said.

Alexander and others said that safety has been a concern for many people along the stretch of road. He and others put tires at the intersection with a message urging drivers to slow down.

“We have to come up with something and it starts at home. We can’t keep complaining about the issues that we can fix ourselves. So, we’re doing everything that we can. We are just asking everybody in the community to step up and play their part,” Alexander said. “We just need to turn this region into a one-way, at least while the kids are going to school, to slow the traffic down.”

The Baltimore City Council and the Mayor’s Office presented Alexander with a letter of appreciation for his actions that day.

They are hoping that Milan gets better soon. Alexander even gave the family a unicorn light. He says a unicorn is a symbol of strength and healing.

Friends of the family also shared a GoFundMe to help support the cost of medical bills.
