In a bombshell announcement on Thursday morning, Commissioner Michael Harrison saying he is stepping down as Baltimore's top cop.
Deputy Commissioner Richard Worley has been handpicked by Mayor Brandon Scott to fill the role.
Harrison was the commissioner for four out of his five year contract with the city.
Fox45 spoke with residents about the state of public safety in that time.
Stephanie Harris is a Fells Point business owner. She says the change of leadership is a welcome one for her.
“If we get a new commissioner that’s in office, I want to hear what you have to say. What are you bringing to the table for Baltimoreans? What can you tell us and show us to make to make us feel safe," said Harris.
Max, works in Federal Hill and has said the city has seen a sense of lawlessness of the last few years.
“It’s kind of the wild west out here, when you’re out here on your own at 3 or 4 in the morning," said Max.
Prior to coming to Baltimore, Commissioner Harrison was the Chief of Police in New Orleans.
There has been speculation that Harrison was one of the front runners for the Chief of Police job in the nation's capital.
However, Harrison says he has no job lined up with any department and he will be spending time with family.
