Second driver in fatal Baltimore Beltway crash to be held without bail

A judge on Thursday ruled that Lisa Lea, the second driver indicted in the crash on the Baltimore Beltway that left six construction workers dead, will be held without bail.

The ruling comes three days after indictments were handed to the two drivers involved in the fatal crash. The driver of the other vehicle, 20-year old Melachi Brown, was placed on home confinement Wednesday.

After Monday’s indictments were handed, authorities couldn’t find Lea until two days later, when she turned herself into Maryland authorities. Prosecutors said Lea told police she was in Las Vegas

Both drivers are facing six counts of felony negligent manslaughter, six counts of death of a vulnerable person and numerous traffic violations, including aggressive driving and speeding.

Lea, 54, was accused of traveling more than 100 mph, and hitting Brown’s car while changing lanes before crashing on the Inner Loop near Interstate 70 in Woodlawn.

Prosecutors said Lea was on a concoction of prescription drugs, including oxycodone and marijuana, while behind the wheel.

Court testimony revealed the Volkswagen Jetta, driven by Brown, hit speeds of 122 mph just prior to the crash. Authorities said dash camera video from another vehicle showed Brown’s car darting in and out of traffic.

Lea was seriously hurt in the crash. Brown was not injured.
