A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after shooting himself with a BB gun, according to Baltimore City Police Department.

Police say, at around 7:48 p.m., officers were sent to an area hospital to investigate a report of a child shot with a BB gun on the 1500 block of Richland Street.

Officers found a 3-year-old boy in critical condition due to a self-inflicted BB gun wound, said authorities.

Police say detectives working to learn where the child had obtained the BB gun and who was responsible for watching the child during the time of the shooting.

The department says the 3-year-old is stable but in critical condition.

Child Abuse detectives are taking control of this investigation, according to city police.

Police are continuing to investigate this incident.
