Baltimore may be one of the worst cities in the country to raise a family, according to a new survey from Wallet Hub. The study found Columbia, Maryland, ranks among the best.
Baltimore comes in at number 175 out of 182 cities, just ahead of Shreveport, Louisiana, and just behind Hialeah, Florida.
The study scores cities on five factors, including family fun, health and safety, education and child care, affordability, and socio-economics.
Baltimore ranked best in affordability at number 116. It scored worst on socio-economics (176) and education and child care (165).
The affordability category includes cost of living and the affordability of housing. Socio-economics considers the share of two-parent families, the share of families living in poverty and receiving food stamps, and the unemployment rate.
Education looked at the quality of the school system, graduation rate and cost of child care, among other factors.
Columbia, Maryland, came in at number 13. It scored best in affordability and worst on family fun.
Fremont, California, is the best place to raise a family, according to the survey. The worst city in the survey is Cleveland, Ohio.
