A 15-year-old carjacking suspect slipped into a Baltimore high school and into a classroom with a loaded gun. Now, questions over how he was able to avoid security measures in place at the school. And a closer look at how school police responded is heard on dispatch audio obtained by Fox45 News.
The officers are heard working with Foxtrot, the city's police helicopter unit during those moments the intruder entered the building.
School police officer: "Be advised, we got a code red in our building. We got Baltimore city SWAT team running through."
BPD Foxtrot: "Foxtrot on school police."
School police dispatch: "Go ahead."
Foxtrot: "(Inaudible) just had a carjacking pursuit. The suspect ran into the back of Carver High School."
School police officer: "75 Adam, we're locking down."
Tense moments at the school. A student shared a picture, which she said was taken of an armed officer in the school.
It happened Tuesday.
Baltimore city police said officers were working the carjacking of an Uber driver along West Fayette Street that morning when they spotted the wanted vehicle.
Baltimore County's police aviation unit followed the car, then city police before they said the suspect, a 15-year-old Carver High School student ditched the car, ran into the backdoor of the school then slipped into a classroom. Apparently a place where he thought he could blend in.
School police officer: "71, we got him."
School police dispatch: "71, where you got him at?"
School police officer: "We upstairs."
The suspect was caught but the capture triggering questions over school security.
We pressed Sgt. Clyde Boatwright, President of the Baltimore City Schools Police Union for answers.
Sgt. Boatwright: "Our schools are safe, we do have a number of security measures in place."
FOX45 News: "Well then, how does a student get into a school with a loaded gun and then goes to a classroom, how does that happen?"
Sgt. Boatwright: "Well, there are a number of factors."
FOX45 News: "Did somebody drop the ball, did security drop the ball?"
Sgt. Boatwright: "No. I don't think that there was where anyone made any mistakes in this. The adults in this case did exactly what they were supposed to do. They notified the police officers that were there that they had an intruder, they notified the police officers which classroom the person was in, he was isolated and he was quickly identified."
Initially police said there was more than one suspect involved in the carjacking, where the suspects also assaulted the driver.
So far, no word about another arrest.
