Thursday, March 23 could prove to be one of the most violent days in Baltimore history after 11 people were shot in multiple shootings.
The violence began just after midnight when six people were shot outside a Edmondson Avenue strip mall. One of the victims died.
"Right now, it's about the drugs, it's about the drug use," said a longtime resident hours after the mass shooting.
Thursday afternoon on Monroe Street in West Baltimore, gunshots injured another woman who is being treated at the hospital.
Minutes later, a man was shot on Barclay Street and another man shot during a robbery on Eastern Avenue.
Thursday night in the Upton community, more gunfire injured two other victims, with one in critical condition.
The seven victims shot on Baltimore's west side are raising questions about the city's new Group Violence Reduction Strategy which is being deployed in that district.
City leaders plan to replicate the strategy in other areas of the city, however, former federal prosecutor Thiru Vignarajah is convinced its the right move.
"If city leaders are so much in a bubble that they think things are going well, they need to get out and talk to people on the street," said Vignarajah.
