A student from Achievement Academy was killed in a shooting in Northeast Baltimore this morning, according to Baltimore City Schools officials.
Sherry Christian, a spokesperson for Baltimore City Schools, said that students were already scheduled to have the day off tomorrow because of a professional development day. The school will provide counseling for staff and students next week, according to Christian.
The scene of the shooting was a gas station near the intersection of East Northern Parkway and McClean Boulevard, which is less than a half mile from the school building and even closer to the athletic fields.
Police were called to the gas station about 9:45 this morning for a report of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they said they found a person who had been shot. He was taken to a hospital but died later, according to police.

This shooting is the second homicide of the day and the third shooting of the day. The first homicide happened just after 8 this morning in West Baltimore, where police say that officers found a man lying in the street who had been shot. At about the same time, police were called to a shooting in Northwest Baltimore. Investigators say a man was trying to tow a vehicle in the 2900 block of Garrison Boulevard when we has shot.
As of this morning, there were 51 homicides in Baltimore in 2023 compared to 70 last year, a 27% decrease. Nonfatal shootings are also down, according to police. So far this year, there have been 94 nonfatal shootings compared to 133 at this time last year, according to police. That's a 29% decrease from last year.
