A SWAT standoff near Ball Ground Tuesday ended in the arrest of a man who had barricaded himself in a home, the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office reported.
According to the sheriff’s office, a sheriff’s deputy was following up on a theft investigation Tuesday at a home on Brent Drive near Ball Ground, where a vehicle suspected in recent thefts was parked. There, the deputy found Brandon Burns, 23 of Ball Ground, who was wanted for felony probation violation, and Burns was arrested.
Investigating deputies went to a home off Edwards Mill Road, off Newt Green Road near Ball Ground. When they arrived, Casey Turner, 34 of Ball Ground, who was also wanted for felony probation violation, fled on foot from the home, and authorities said he was immediately captured and arrested.
Inside the home was also James Haley, 31 of Ball Ground, who was wanted for two counts of felony probation violation, and was also wanted in Pickens and Gordon counties.
According to the sheriff’s office, Haley refused to exit the home and barricaded himself inside, and the Cherokee County Multi-Agency SWAT Team was called there. Authorities also obtained a search warrant.
While authorities attempted to talk Haley out of the home, a woman left the building and told deputies that Haley would not let her exit the home but she was eventually able to get out, the sheriff’s office reported. After a robot was sent into the house to find Haley, SWAT members entered the home and introduced a chemical irritant into the room where he was thought to be hiding, and Haley surrendered to authorities.
Haley was charged with false imprisonment, obstruction of an officer and two counts of felony probation violation.
As of Wednesday, all three remained in the Cherokee County jail without bond, sheriff’s office spokesperson Capt. Jay Baker said.
After the three arrests, investigators went to Pickens County where they recovered a dump truck that was reported stolen from Cherokee County in October, the sheriff’s office reported.
