Advocating for passenger trains: Baker City resident lends support to the cause
Matt Krabacher heard about the local effort to reinstate passenger rail service to Northeast Oregon, and he decided to lend his support — and time — to the cause. He attended a meeting in Baker City in December 2023, then helped in the effort to gather signatures in early 2024 to show local support. The group gathered 1,090signatures, which were sent to Amtrak, the Federal Railroad Administration and Oregon legislators.

“Paint Your Wagon” may not be considered a classic movie musical, but if nothing else, the big-budget 1969 film spotlighted some beautiful Eastern Oregon scenery. The movie, which filmed on location in Oregon and starred Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood and Jean Seberg, has also now inspired the newest addition to the Oregon Film Trail.
Baker County Weed District offers free herbicide
The Baker County Weed District is offering free herbicide at several places in the county starting in May and continuing through the summer and into early fall. Money for the herbicide comes from the county’s property tax levy for noxious weed control.

Woman accused of drunkenly hitting Baker FFA bus faces plea hearing
DESCHUTES COUNTY – A plea hearing has been scheduled for the woman accused of crashing into a bus full of Baker FFA students and teachers. 34-year old Katrina Nicole Dacus of Culver is set to enter a plea June 3. She is charged with 26 Class A misdemeanors, including eight counts of fourth-degree assault, 15 counts of recklessly endangering another person and single counts of DUII, reckless driving and second-degree criminal mischief.

Chuck was born February 4, 1931, to Charles and Margaret Olson in Roseburg, Oregon. He was the third of four children. He graduated from Madras High School in 1949. PCHS Sophomore Sawyer Quinton is heading to state golf tournament

BAKER BOYS GOLF: Bulldogs claim district title, will defend Class 4A state title next week
The Baker boys golf team dominated the district tournament at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Baker City, and will defend its Class 4A state title next week. The Bulldogs claimed the top four individual places and won the team title by 94 strokes over Pendleton in the two-day, 36-hole tournament that started Monday, May 6 and concluded Tuesday, May 7.

Spreading Joy: Baker Co. Sheriff Office’s peanut butter fundraiser exceeding expectations
BAKER COUNTY — People across Baker County are spreading the love to help local students in need. The Baker County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) announced in April the start of a peanut butter drive to donate to the Baker City Backpack Program, which helps feed needy students in the community. The agency is accepting 16 ounce jars of peanut butter.
City of Union Cleanup day scheduled for May 11
