    SPORTS ROUNDUP: Firebirds advance in conference baseball tournament

    Southern Nash amassed 17 hits and scored multiple runs in five of seven at-bats as the Firebirds defeated Roanoke Rapids 18-6 in the first round of the Big East 2A/3A Conference Tournament on Monday night.

    The Firebirds (10-4 overall) played at No. 2 seed Northern Nash (13-7) on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the championship contest on Thursday.

    Southern erased a 2-2 tie with a six-run third inning and went on to add three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and five more in the seventh.

    Brayden Parker and Luke Faulkner (double, three RBI) led Southern Nash at the plate, while Blake Strickland added three hits with a double and an RBI. Providing two hits was Keegan Wallace (two RBI) while Brennan Pridgen (double, two RBI), Isaiah Battle (two RBI), Jeremiah Battle (double, RBI) and Maddox Deans (double, RBI) added one hit each for the Firebirds.

    Strickland earned the win on the mound, as he went six innings and allowed seven hits and six runs (five earned) with four strikeouts and two walks. Faulkner worked an inning in relief.

    Northern Nash 14 Rocky Mount 2

    The Knights, seeded No. 2, scored all of their runs in three innings (four in the second, three in the third and seven in the fourth) to defeat Rocky Mount in the first round of the Big East 2A/3A Conference Tournament Tuesday night in Red Oak.

    Northern Nash played rival Southern Nash on Tuesday night in the semifinals, with the winner moving on to the championship game on Thursday.

    Peyton Clay (two RBI, double), Brady Jenkins (double, four RBI) and Tristan Murray (two doubles, three RBI) led NN with two hits each.

    Chason Boseman went 3.2 innings on the mound for the Knights and allowed two hits and one earned run with six strikeouts and seven walks. Landon Keefe worked 1.1 frames and allowed an unearned run with three walks and two strikeouts.

    For the Gryphons (0-18 overall), James High and Tyson Lynch had the only hits with Lynch doubling and driving in a run.

    Pitchers Jack McKellar, Alex Beasley and High combined to allow five hits and 14 runs (13 earned) with eight walks and three strikeouts.

    Nash Central 3 Franklinton 0

    The Bulldogs improved to 12-11 overall behind a three-hit shutout from pitcher Colby Lewis as they advanced to the semifinals of the Big East 2A/3A Conference Tournament with a first-round win on Monday.

    Nash Central, the No. 5 seed, played at No. 1 seed Bunn in the semifinals on Tuesday, with the winner moving on to the finals on Thursday.

    Lewis threw 101 pitches, struck out nine and walked three for Nash Central, which played mistake-free defense behind him to preserve the shutout.

    Shea Whitley and Winston Lee (double, two RBI) led the Bulldogs at the plate with two hits each. Camden Posey, Lewis and Jon Ayden Horne collected one hit each.

    RMA 11, JP II Catholic 3

    Rocky Mount Academy (11-4 overall) broke open a close game with a five-run fourth inning and the Eagles went on for the nonconference win over John Paul II Catholic on Monday night.

    RMA finished with 12 hits, led by Luke Holloman (double, two RBI) with three hits. Jordan Wright (home run, two RBI) and Seth Tickel (home run, two RBI) added two hits while collecting one hit were Gehrig Miller, Dustin Proctor (RBI), Carson Cross, Donaven Wright and Marti McKnight.

    Seth Tickel (three walks, five strikeouts in four innings), Parker Sherrod (four strikeouts) and Jordan Wright (three strikeouts, one walk) combined to allowed five hits and three runs (none earned) on the mound.

    SOFTBALL

    Nash Central 12 Northern Nash 4

    Hannah Hudlow homered and Nash Central had six players with at least one hit as the Bulldogs defeated Northern Nash at home in the first round of the Big East 2A/3A Conference Tournament at home on Monday night.

    Nash Central (13-5 overall), the No. 3 seed, played at No. 2 seed Roanoke Rapids in the tournament semifinals on Tuesday. The winner plays for the championship on Thursday.

    Northern Nash, the No. 6 seed, finished 5-12 overall.

    Hudlow led the Bulldogs with two hits and five RBI, while Layla Lafferty (double, RBI), Gracyn King (RBI), Rylee Brewer, Hannah Frazier and Maci Worrells added one hit each. Abbygale Joyner drove in a run.

    Frazier allowed four runs (one earned) with nine strikeouts and one walk over seven innings on the mound for the Bulldogs.

    The Knights got one hit each from Piper Jones, Emily Clay (triple, two RBI), Emma Hunt, Lara Sigers (RBI), Emma Shingleton, Jordyn Harvin (double, RBI) and Carly Wilson.

    Jones and Clay combined for seven walks and six strikeouts on the mound for Northern Nash.

    Roanoke Rapids def. RM

    Roanoke Rapids (14-2 overall), the No. 2 seed, defeated Rocky Mount (seventh, seed, 0-20) on Monday night in the first round of the Big East 2A/3A Conference Tournament at home.

    The Yellow Jackets played host to No. 3 seed Nash Central on Tuesday night with the winner advancing to Thursday’s championship game.

    Halifax 8, RMA 3

    A seven-run fifth inning allowed Halifax Academy to break a 1-1 tie and go on to defeat Rocky Mount Academy in a Carolina Independent Conference game on Monday.

    Berkeley Miller led the Eagles (4-1 conference) with three hits (one a double) and an RBI. Ellen Feagans (double, RBI), Gabbi Ams (double, RBI), Landry Miller (double) and Katie Bulluck provided one hit each.

    Berkeley Miller went four innings and allowed five hits and five earned runs with 11 strikeouts and four walks on the mound for RMA. Landry Miller added three innings and surrendered two hits and three earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts.

    FCS 16, ECHS 3

    Faith Christian built a lead through four frames, then erupted for eight runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Eastern Christian HomeSchool in a nonconference game on Monday.

    The Patriots emerged 12-5 overall.

    Four players enjoyed multi-hit games for FCS.

    Abby Vann had three hits and two RBI, while Kate Camp (home run, double, three RBI), Tynleigh Hinton (two home runs, five RBI) and Payton Whitley (double, two RBI) added two hits each. Emma Kate Davis had then other hit and Elizabeth Jackson drove in a run for the Patriots.

    FCS played error-free defense behind pitchers Whitley and Peyton Hagans, who combined to allow just one hit and three earned runs with five walks and seven strikeouts.

    SOCCER

    Southern Nash 9 South Lenoir 0

    Southern Nash’s girls soccer team improved to 11-4 overall with a nonconference shutout over the Devils in Deep Run on Monday.

    Emory Gibson scored four goals for then Ladybirds, while Charlotte Benson also had four goals and dished out an assist.

    Emma Batchelor had the other goal and Ana Alonso provided an assist for Southern Nash.
