UMI Wichita is a great date night treat

It was both dinner and a show on a Saturday night date night.

Neither my girlfriend Jennifer nor I had been to the UMI Japanese Steakhouse since it opened in November 2023 in the former Sumo by Nambara spot at 13th and Greenwich. Watching the skilled maneuvers of a chef preparing the food at the table sounded nice, and so did a tasty surf and turf dinner.

UMI Wichita delivers that kind of experience. Featuring Japanese teppanyaki, hibachi, and sushi, the dining experience comes complete with the classic flaming onion volcano and shrimp tosses to the mouth. The chef working our table was very skilled, cracking us up with one-liners while flipping, slicing, and tossing ingredients (and the occasional spatula and salt/pepper shaker). This is my kind of dinner theatre!

The food was equally as great as the show. Jennifer ordered Filet Mignon & Scallops with fried rice. I ordered the Filet Mignon & Shrimp with fried rice. We were served a nice house salad before the chef arrived which was quite refreshing. The steaks were prepared perfectly as ordered and the shrimp was spot-on excellent. The scallops were good and nicely sauced but lacked a good sear. Balancing things out was the flawlessly seasoned vegetables and the fried rice is some of the best I've had for quite a while. Complimenting the meal, Jennifer and I enjoyed a couple of cocktails. I tried the Sour Apple Martini and Jennifer sampled the Springtime Colada, a delicious concoction of Bacardi Pineapple, Captain Morgan, Pinacolada mix, pineapple juice, and dark rum.

Costing a bit over $130 for dinner, cocktails, and tip, this was an excellent dining experience, making for a great date night. UMI Wichita serves up good eats and puts on a fine show, making it repeat visit-worthy. If you haven't been to UMI, consider it simply because you like a great steak, or surf & turf dinner, or if you're looking for something different, or perhaps a special occasion. Besides, your significant other deserves it.
