How to navigate Broadway Curve traffic changes

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) this week debuted the most significant Broadway Curve update yet — and it led to traffic delays and confusion.

Why it matters: The Broadway Curve Improvement Project, the largest reconstruction effort in metro Phoenix history, is expected to expand traffic capacity in the area by 60% when completed next year.

• But with construction in its third year , some drivers are growing frustrated with the frequent closures and configuration changes.

State of play: Two new lanes, called collector-distributor or CD roads , opened on the westbound I-10 Monday.

• These lanes, which can be accessed just south of Baseline Road, are meant to separate drivers who want to exit to U.S. 60, Broadway Road, northbound State Route 143 or 40th Street from through-traffic continuing toward downtown Phoenix.

Yes, but: When the CD roads opened Monday, the lanes available for through traffic were whittled from five to three.

• This led to miles-long backups heading westbound toward the Broadway Curve during the morning rush hour.
• ADOT spokesperson Luis Lopez told Axios the department will add two additional through-traffic lanes in November and there will be six total lanes when the project is completed next year.

What they're saying: "Since this is new for Arizona drivers it's going to take a little getting used to, but it's beneficial in the long run … because it will alleviate traffic," Lopez said.

Reality check: The CD roads merge back with the I-10 through lanes once they pass 40th Street, meaning westbound drivers headed downtown and beyond can use the CDs, as well.

• ADOT spokesperson Marcy McMacken said the CD roads have been less congested than the through lanes, so drivers should consider using them until additional mainline lanes open.

The bottom line: Plan for backups if you're headed westbound on I-10, at least until drivers are more familiar with the CD roads.

What's next: The eastbound CD roads are expected to open this fall.
