According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 14-year-old boy was charged after a smuggling attempt in Maverick County earlier this week.
On Tuesday, troopers stopped to help a driver pulled over on the side of the road with their hazards on. The driver was the 14-year-old’s mother.
"Where did I travel from? From Austin," she responds to a trooper's question in Spanish in the video clip. "My son disappeared and I'm trying to track his location."
She explained that her son texted her and told her that he was lost in the brush.
"He's young. He's 14 years old," she adds.
In another clip, she's seen talking to another trooper.
"What are you doing here?" the trooper asked.
"My son disappeared with my car since last night and since I have access to tracking his phone, it's showing he's here," she said. "I spent all night looking for him."
Using the woman's phone, DPS troopers helped figure out exactly where he was. They found him after a short search.
"Were you driving your mother's car?" a state trooper asked the 14-year-old. He nodded "yes."
The boy confessed that he was the driver in a vehicle pursuit earlier that morning while trying to smuggle six or seven illegal immigrants from Mexico. They ended up pulling off to the side of the road and bailing out.
The immigrants were located and referred to Border Control. The teen is charged with smuggling of persons.
