Augusta-area vet offers service for 'the most difficult part of loving a furry companion'

By Joe Hotchkiss, Augusta Chronicle,

A new business in Augusta helps pet owners peacefully euthanize their animal companions in their own homes.

Augusta-area licensed veterinarian Dr. Juli Peters is helping represent CodaPet, a nationwide company founded by veterinarians wanting to provide end-of-life care for cats, dogs and other animals where the pets feel most comfortable.

“I decided to offer in-home euthanasia for the benefit of being able to make the most difficult part of loving a furry companion as comfortable a transition as possible for both the pet and his/her person or family,” Means said in a statement Wednesday.

Peters services Augusta and surrounding cities including Appling, Grovetown, Harlem, Evans, Dearing and Boneville.

If a family wants to engage CodaPet, a veterinarian contacts the family to address questions or concerns. The vet reviews the pet’s diagnosis with the family and renders a quality-of-life assessment to assess the pet’s health and to ensure the need for euthanasia.

Unhurried visits often last 45 minutes to an hour, and owners are encouraged to stay with their pets to comfort them throughout the visit.

CodaPet also provides aftercare support by arranging transportation and cremation services.
