Two juveniles were arrested in Oregon in connection to a deadly drive-by shooting in Auburn.
The Auburn Police Department (APD) said the two juveniles, a boy and a girl, were arrested in Gresham, Oregon, Wednesday morning. Gresham is located about 16 miles east of Portland.
Auburn police told KOMO's sister station KATU that charges against the two juveniles were still pending, and it was unknown if the two had family in the Gresham area. The ages of the two juveniles are currently unknown.
The arrests are in connection to a deadly drive-by shooting that happened in Auburn Tuesday morning. APD spokesperson Kolby Crossley told KOMO News Tuesday morning officers responded to the intersection of Auburn Way South and Fourth Street Southeast around 9:30 a.m. for a report of a shooting.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man in his 20s who had been shot. First responders gave the man medical aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Photos from the scene show a black Audi in the street with bullet holes through the passenger side window. Crossley told KOMO News another vehicle pulled up to the Audi at the stop light and fired multiple shots into the vehicle. The man who was shot and killed was in the passenger seat of the vehicle.
Roads in the area were closed for several hours Tuesday while police investigated the deadly shooting.
Long-time Auburn business owner Ahmad Shashani said he opened his shop Tuesday morning to the sound of gunshots.
“I heard two or three shots, I'm not sure, and then police cars from everywhere," Shashani recalled.
He then found out what happened at a busy intersection just a few yards away from his business at Fourth Street Southeast and Auburn Way South.
"Young man, 20 years old, not fair,” Shashani said. “It's really sad for the whole community, all of us. It's happening every single day, somewhere.”
In the last month, Auburn police have ramped up emphasis on crime hotspot areas in an attempt to put a stop to shootings, business break-ins and robberies. There was even a recent meeting at Auburn City Hall to address crime.
"It was a wonderful town, not anymore," Shashani said of the city he has been doing business in for more than 50 years. “Defund the police? That’s what you get,” he said to elected leaders.
Shashani has seen a world of change and ended the conversation with this message: "The politicians, they should listen! It's time to listen. Enough is enough.”
