A crash that caused a car to overturn multiple times left three people dead in Placer County on Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The California Highway Patrol officials said a BMW crashed in unincorporated Placer County, near Roseville, on westbound Vineyard Road, just west of Cook Riolo Road at around 1:50 a.m.
Officials said the car crashed into a power pole, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The car then rolled over several times and hit a brick gate before stopping just south of the roadway.
First responders pronounced all three occupants of the vehicle dead at the scene. CHP described all three people as 21-year-old men from Roseville.
Officials said it is not known if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash and that a determination would be made by the Placer County Coroner's Office.
Those who knew the three men visited the crash site throughout the day Sunday to drop off flowers and pay their respects. That included Diana Gerus, who said she was good friends with one of the men who died.
"Going by here, it just seemed a lot more real, that one of my closest friends is gone, so it's kind of painful and it hurts," Gerus said. "Everyone will miss him, and no one will ever forget him."
Gerus said she is devastated that her friend is no longer alive. But she added that she does not want to dwell on his death, and instead wants to focus on his life and legacy.
"The smile he brought into every room he walked into, and the way he could just make anyone smile," Gerus said. "No matter what troubles you would be going through, he could either walk into a room, or you'd get into his car, or you'd just meet up with him, and all you can think about is that you're with someone who's lighting up everything around you."
People who live on Vineyard Road said they were startled, but not completely surprised, to learn about the deadly crash. One neighbor, who did not want to be identified, told KCRA 3 that she came across the damage during her morning walk.
"When I was checking for traffic, I saw that the road was blocked off. There was like a big truck with what I thought was a cherry picker on it, and then I looked again and realized it was the power pole right there that was tipped over," the neighbor said.
She said drivers traveling on Vineyard Road need to slow down, adding that even though it is a more rural area, motorists still need to be careful.
"I'm not surprised that something tragic has happened, though. We hear cars flying down this road all the time, constantly," the neighbor said. "Just trying to pull out of your own driveway, it gets scary."
