Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze calls QB play through spring 'inconsistent'

The Auburn football quarterback room is going through a rough patch this spring.

Too many inconsistencies.

That was the way Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze described Auburn's quarterback room when asked by the media on Monday afternoon. The Tigers' signal-callers were anything but consistent in 2022, and under the new regime led by Freeze, things are expected to change.

A new-look passing attack with better quarterback and receiver play? The offseason should be one of serious change, then, right?

Well, not so fast.

Freeze spoke with the media and informed them that through six practices, two of the biggest units on offense were the ones that "have a long way to go."

“The two positions that stand out to me right now where we just have a long way to go are the quarterback room and the wide receiver room," Freeze said. "I'm not saying we have arrived at other spots."

Freeze's belief is that the staff's responsibility is to make sure there isn't a lack of understanding when it comes to what they want the quarterbacks to do. Outside of that, it seems like its on the players to listen of what they're being taught and to do their best to execute.

Through a couple of weeks of practice, things just aren't consistent enough yet.

"I don't like the inconsistencies that I have continued to see through six (practices). I think part of that is on us, the staff, to get fixed. I have challenged myself and the quarterbacks to get some this fixed, the inconsistencies."

The only position Freeze gave credit to was the linebacker room, stating that it was one of the few units that he felt like had improved through the first six practices of spring. He also added that the room may be a bit deeper than he initially thought.

The lack of consistency isn't because the room isn't coachable. Freeze described them as coachable and noted that their attitude has been good throughout spring.

But it's clear he's not happy with what he's seen out of the unit thus far.
