Pete Alonso heard loud boos when he came up to bat on Wednesday night, a response to his viral plea to Braves starter Bryce Elder to “throw it again!” after he took Elder deep in Tuesday’s series opener.

In his first at-bat on Wednesday night, those boos turned to cheers after a Charlie Morton fastball struck Alonso on the wrist, sending the Mets slugger to the ground in pain.

Alonso eventually had to leave the game, and assumed the cheers from the Atlanta crowd were a response to his hot mic incident the night before.

“I just think that’s a consequence of what I said in the dugout and the got mic,” Alonso said. “It’s just unfortunate, because I think it got blown out of proportion.

“Friendly competitive banter. I guarantee if you were to mic both dugouts, you’re gonna hear certain things that people could take offense to. But I didn’t mean anything by it. honestly, Francisco got a hanging slider, I got a hanging slider, and I asked him nicely to throw one to Danny. It’s just friendly, competitive banter.”

Elder shrugged off Alonso’s remarks after Tuesday’s start, even saying he might have done the same if he ever hit a home run. Morton apologized to Alonso after his X-rays came back negative, and Alonso insisted he wasn’t yelling out to Elder maliciously, though the crowd clearly didn’t care for it, and didn’t forget by the following night.

“I didn't think it'd be that offensive,” Alonso said. “But they have really hot mics in the dugout. When things can be twisted a certain way, it is what it is. It's part of playing in the major leagues.”
