Pete Alonso leaves game after HBP vs. Braves the night after trash talk war

One night after getting into a war of words with the Braves, Mets slugger Pete Alonso was hit by a pitch and had to leave the game with a wrist injury.

New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso was a big talking point after his team’s first game of the series in Atlanta against the rival Braves on Tuesday night. Alonso, after missing a hung slider on the first pitch of at-bat, hammered a monster home run to give New York a 4-1 lead in the third inning. After the homer, though, he was chirping Braves pitcher Bryce Elder, telling him to “Throw it again”.

Of course, after Atlanta came back to tie the game and take the lead, the trash talk was returned Alonso’s way. But on Wednesday night with Charlie Morton on the bump for the Braves, the plot thickened.

Morton saw a fastball get away from him while facing Alonso and, as the Mets first baseman went to check his swing, the pitch hit him in the wrist. He went down in a lot of pain, lumbered to first, but was then removed from the game after being evaluated by the training staff.

Let’s go ahead and get in front of this — no part of that truly looked intentional. Yes, that fastball from Morton was supposed to be in on the hands of the Mets star, but Alonso starting his swing put his hands and wrists in the line of fire, ultimately leading to the unfortunate scene.

That, of course, won’t stop Mets fans from turning up the heat, especially considering the bad blood and animosity present with New York and the Braves in addition to the events of Tuesday night. And it also wouldn’t be a surprise to see some form of retaliation in the remaining games of the series.

In the long run, though, let’s hope leaving the game is the extent of the injury for Alonso, whose trash-talking homer on Tuesday added to his MLB-best home run total on the year, his 22nd.
