Aspiring hockey players around the globe tend to dream of one thing: winning the Stanley Cup. After all, Lord Stanley's hardware is second to none when it comes to sports trophies, and once a player finally gets to hoist the Cup, there's little left for them to accomplish.

Kyle Okposo was one of several players who won their first Stanley Cup ring with the Florida Panthers in June. The veteran forward then became an unrestricted free agent this offseason, leaving people to wonder if he was going to return to the Panthers' lineup this fall or not.

On Thursday, the former 2006 first-round pick shed some light on his future with a major career announcement.

"As I reflect on my NHL career... I always tried to treat people with respect," Okposo said in an open letter as he announced his retirement, via an open letter with CAA Hockey. "That respect was reciprocated throughout my interactions with most people in the hockey world."

Okposo went on to thank various individuals who helped him achieve his goals throughout his career. He mentioned how hard NHL trainers work to make everything work, whether they're helping the players with their physique or equipment.

The St. Paul, Minnesota native also highlighted his former coaches, acknowledging that their job is far from easy. "Coaching is such an important job, and I appreciate everything I learned during my tenure playing hockey," said Okposo.

Of course, Okposo couldn't forget to mention the terrific teammates he's shared the ice with throughout the last 17 seasons.

"The banter, laughs, arguments, trivia, dumb conversations, raw moments - I loved all of it," Okposo said as he reflected on past teammates. "As all of my teammates know, a heavy convo with a nice glass of red is right up my alley.

First-round picks don't always pan out, but that hasn't been the case for Okposo. The former Minnesota Golden Gopher has racked up 242 goals and 372 assists for 614 points across 1,051 regular season games played for the Panthers, Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders.

Time will reveal what becomes of Okposo's post-playing career. While he might decide to step away from the game he's dedicated his life to, it's always possible that he could show up as a coach or in a front-office role sooner rather than later.
