Thunderstorms rumble through Athens, NE Ga

With overnight thunderstorms that are expected to continue through at least part of the day, Athens and much of northeast Georgia woke up to a flood watch that has been extended into the evening hours. It’s part of the same weather system that brought severe storms to much of west Georgia and spawned deadly tornadoes in Mississippi and Alabama.

From WSB…

Severe storms in west Georgia brought large hail and at least one confirmed tornado Sunday morning.

In Troup County residents saw hail they described as “the size of golf balls.”

It is unclear if the large hail injured anyone.

The National Weather Service reported that the hail was the size of a quarter.

At least one tornado touched down during the storm.

The tornado downed trees, damaged buildings, and left people trapped in their homes Sunday morning.

It’s unclear how many people were injured. Crews are still working on getting to people who are trapped.

Two tigers that escaped from a west Georgia zoo after a tornado on Sunday have been recaptured, officials said.

Troup County Sheriff officials said they received a report that a tiger was unaccounted for at the Pine Mountain Animal Safari park after a confirmed tornado tore through Troup County.

The tornado downed trees, damaged buildings and left people trapped in their homes Sunday morning.

It’s unclear how many people were injured in the storms. Crews are still working on getting to people who are trapped.

The park has not provided comment online regarding the tiger’s disappearance.
