Mom: son who fell from Athens parking deck is recovering at home

His mother says Tyler Douthit is continuing his recovery at his home in Cherokee County after his release from Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center: the football standout from Woodstock High School, who has committed to play college ball at Samford University, fell four floors from the parking garage on Washington Street earlier this month. It’s a fall that continues to be investigated by Athens-Clarke County Police.

The family of a 18-year-old football standout who fell four stories from an Athens parking deck shared an uplifting update on Friday.

Tyler Douthit is now back at his Cherokee County home and expected to make a full recovery, according to a post on his mother’s Facebook page.

“We are so very thankful to have prayer warriors around the country who have prayed for and supported our family continuously this week. We appreciate each and every one of you and know that those prayers continue to work,” his mother said.

Athens police said Douthit fell off the fourth floor of a parking deck off West Washington Street and landed on the railing. Police said a witness who was driving by saw him fall.

The Douthit family thanked the witness for staying with their son along with the first responders and hospital staff.

“We also know this miracle would not be possible if it were not for the quick actions of the first responders, trauma team at Piedmont Athens Regional and the witness who saw the accident and stayed with Tyler until help arrived. We will be eternally indebted to each of you!” his mother said.

Douthit plays football at Woodstock High School and committed to play Division I FCS football at Samford University in the fall. He was also voted ‘Most Outstanding Senior’ at the school.

The family also thanked Douthit’s friends, teachers and classmates for their support during this time.
