Cherokee Co teen injured in fall from Athens parking deck

An 18 year-old high school football player from Cherokee County continues his recovery after a four-story fall from an Athens parking deck. Tyler Douthit from Woodstock High School, who has committed to play college football at Samford University, fell from the Washington Street deck in downtown Athens. He was found by a passerby and taken to an Athens hospital where he was, at last report, in ICU. Athens-Clarke County Police say foul play is not suspected in his fall, which police say appears to have been accidental.

A Cherokee County teen is recovering in a local hospital after he fell from a parking garage in Athens.

Tuesday night, police in Athens are trying to figure out what happened at the West Washington Street parking garage.

Officers said 18-year-old Tyler Douthit fell out of a window.

According to the police report, everything happened around 2:40 a.m. on Sunday. They said the victim was on the fourth floor of the parking deck when he somehow fell and landed on the railing.

Police said a witness saw Tyler fall as he was driving by.

Security also told officer there was another person with Tyler in the parking deck, just before he fell.

The security officer said surveillance video didn’t show the incident. However, it did show someone running away from the parking deck at the time.

Tyler is an offensive tackle at Woodstock High School in Cherokee County and he recently signed to play football for Samford next year. He was voted ‘Most Outstanding Senior’ at the school.

Superintendent Brian Hightower released a statement:

“We are devastated by the news of Tyler’s injuries. Tyler is an outstanding student athlete with a huge circle of people who care about him.  He and his family are in my prayers.”
