Cleaning up the ‘ol swimming hole in Limestone County

ATHENS– Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful and the Tennessee Valley Authority are holding a concentrated volunteer clean-up effort this weekend at the Cowford Campground.

The event is 8 a.m. to noon Saturday; the campground is at 8700 Cowford Road in southern Limestone County.

Summer’s coming and water-lovers, boaters and fishermen will be hitting the Tennessee River for all types of water-related activities from watersports and swimming to kayaking, canoeing and waterskiing.

But unfortunately, in addition to dead foliage and broken tree limbs from the heavy winter rains, some people use the roadways leading to the water, boat launch sites, and the river itself to dump their trash and discarded items.

Spring clean-up crews have found tarps, tires, TVs and rusted car parts piled up along the riverbanks, swimming and fishing holes.

The waterways are an important resource for drinking water, recreation opportunities, habitats for wildlife, and natural beauty for peaceful enjoyment.

Volunteers will work in teams along the shorelines while boats, canoes, and kayaks are welcomed to participate from the water.

Most cleanup areas are away from traffic, so young people are welcome.

All registered volunteers will receive instructions along with trash bags, mesh bags, litter grabbers, gloves, safety vests, and some buckets.

Volunteers are welcome to bring their own shovels, rakes, or other equipment.

Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult and have a hold-harmless agreement signed by a parent or guardian.

KALB and TVA will provide breakfast.

The first 100 registered volunteers will receive a free litter grabber and reusable litter bag to take home.

Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear for cleaning up trash and debris and sunscreen or bug repellent is recommended, depending on the weather.

Volunteers do not have to register in advance but it is recommended to ensure adequate food and supplies are available.

Call 256-233-8000 or email [email protected] to register.
