Severe weather in northern California has pushed Oregon and California’s departments of transportation to close the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 north of the border to all travel as of Tuesday morning.

Southbound traffic is being held at exit 14 in Ashland. Northbound traffic is being stopped in Redding. Caltrans says the closure may be for an extended period of time as heavy snow is likely to continue through Tuesday.

Travelers should use extreme caution when determining other routes. Oregon highways 66 and 273 are closed to all except local traffic in those areas.

ODOT warns driver to not attempt detours using lesser maintained routes such as Dead Indian Memorial or Colestin roads. Commercial trucks are asked to keep Ashland Street clear as they wait out the closure.
